Ummm. Yes, but no. I've re...Fiction as freedom. Ummm. Yes, but no. I've recently begun to wonder if the judges of book prizes aren't compelled to gain an MBA before they judge fiction prizes. So often, the *success* of a book is about the market, and that starts with the fundamentals of the literary world. Great if you can get round that, or rocket through it, but there seems to be ample evidence that many works of fiction that *do well* are very much subject to quite cynical market-led decisions by the writer, the agent, the publisher and the seller. I've not read Iyers' books yet, and feel that I must. It's great that he has pulled off his work. Truly. He's done it himself, in a way that is much purer than many.
