I'm nearing the end of A Time for Every Purpose ... (the UK edition) and my judgement remains. He seems to have what Josipovici refers to the post above – "that readiness to follow where instinct seems to lead" – rather writing novels as part of a tactical career.Stephen Mitchelmorehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01658772259307446873noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8470094.post-27766726546218623592012-05-04T16:40:18.170+01:002012-05-04T16:40:18.170+01:00I know what you mean about the book working throug...I know what you mean about the book working through echoes in your own life - that's what I felt too, though I share neither generation nor geography with Knausgaard. And that's the point, too, about the banality of much of the content. The prose lays out the simple facts of life in such a way that you think, Yes, that's it, that's how life is. Or perhaps, how living is. And it's done with such basic, unadorned prose. I must have read hundreds of books which carried the potential to chime with my own life in this way, but which didn't. I'm not sure how to explain why it didn't happen then, but it did with Knausgaard, other than that he's a great, great writer. A Time For Everything, too, was superb. I remember reading that - I was lucky enough to review it - and being just blown away by it, and feeling kind of dizzy, that I knew there was this fantastic writer out there, that nobody else seemed to know about. So I jumped at this when it came out, and just hope that the publishers - and I - have the stamina to go through with the whole thing.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8470094.post-17458289978504072222012-04-18T11:40:15.186+01:002012-04-18T11:40:15.186+01:00Such a compelling review. I've got the galley and have just been waiting for a time when I've got the mental space and energy to give it the attention it seems to deserve.Levi Stahlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11094919454842047688noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8470094.post-40015917549954609402012-03-30T12:10:23.203+01:002012-03-30T12:10:23.203+01:00Hi Kate, I should have said the US edition isn'...Hi Kate, I should have said the US edition isn't out yet but the differently-titled UK one is: http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/Death-Family-Karl-Ove-Knausgaard/9781846554674

I was fortunate enough to read Archipelago's ARC and wanted to foreground that for reasons of gratitude.Stephen Mitchelmorehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01658772259307446873noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8470094.post-9370664516229985002012-03-30T12:05:43.238+01:002012-03-30T12:05:43.238+01:00Disregard my previous comment.
