On the second Friday afternoon of August in 2008, I drove with my wife towards the church of St Andrew in Framingham Earl, Norfolk. Eventually I parked the car, and saw Wilfred Sebald's grave, which was what we had come to do. It was located on the north side of the church grounds, and in front of it there were some fresh flowers, placed there, no doubt some short time before we had arrived, and perhaps by the same hands that had lined a set of pebbles along the top of the tombstone itself. All the other graves were marked with relative impresicion, and reclined this way and that, in sliphod file.

Nine moths earlier I had begun my research on... etc., etc.
