I think that's why I find what I've read of him so accessible - that tonal music is embedded inside these apparently bleak and cold pronouncements, burning away as much filthy logic as it can. Like liquid nitrogen.

That's a weeny JPEG you got there, Stephen. I had to read the comments to find out what the book was.genevievehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02895689949182365454noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8470094.post-21537451636761971042008-04-08T15:37:00.000+01:002008-04-08T15:37:00.000+01:00Thanks, Stephen. The meaning of this illumination, which suddenly began to sing within me, like a verse of Isaiah, or of Jeremiah, I did not penetrate at once, and notably the word trim, which I had never met with, in this sense, long remained obscure.Qlipothhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17343878659776948134noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8470094.post-77544620203793237422008-04-07T17:25:00.000+01:002008-04-07T17:25:00.000+01:00Qlipoth, they are Beckett's words. He would of course be the most reviled of Jews.

The burning illogicality, etc is excellent. The poetry of someone like Gerard Manley Hopkins something similar, where the synaptic, rational flow is deliberately sabotaged, or perhaps incidentally sabotaged- it's not a rational process!otherwise it would be an example of the dead rationality it is sabotaging.

That's why the idea of something like utilitarianism is so depressing to me- the self yoked to a chain of logic, a slave to rational processes. A slave to an instrument of one's mind.Andrewhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11708539533684206357noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8470094.post-30244076533828854162008-04-06T18:18:00.000+01:002008-04-06T18:18:00.000+01:00"but it still carries on on the shelf"Only if the ..."but it still carries on on the shelf"

Only if the ink runs.Stephen Mitchelmorehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01658772259307446873noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8470094.post-50723393955225616602008-04-06T18:16:00.000+01:002008-04-06T18:16:00.000+01:00... but it still carries on on the shelf... sran...... but it still carries on on the shelf... srange notion..Nick Ingramhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13749520203401167021noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8470094.post-56375238774337245452008-04-06T18:13:00.000+01:002008-04-06T18:13:00.000+01:00These are the final words in the book .These are the final words in the book .Stephen Mitchelmorehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01658772259307446873noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8470094.post-8915699865957839162008-04-06T18:07:00.000+01:002008-04-06T18:07:00.000+01:00Book ends?
