David Markson's Reader's Block, page 49

"Björnstjerne Björnson. Rudolf Eucken. Frans Sillanpää.
Verner von Heidenstam. Halldór Laxness. Pearl Buck. Karl
Gjellerup.
Toni Morrison."

Of course, this is unfair. On Halldór Laxness.

  1. Not sure what this post was about really. Strange names perhaps. Doesn't sound strange to me (my english may sound strange to you). However, I have 1 correction note: It's Heidenstam actually. no need to read him!

Better Swedish poetry: Erik Johan Stagnelius, Gunnar Ekelöf, Erik Axel Karlfeldt or Birgitta Trotzig.

  2. When Sillanpää won, he sent a letter to an old literary rival:

"Here I am in Stockholm. Picking up the Nobel. The one you didn't get."

  3. I'd be happy enough with consecutive umlauts.

  4. That was the best thing going for him. Some lingual trivia:

    'sillan', genitive of 'silta' (bridge)
    +
    'pää' (head, end)

And 'Frans' means 'slave', I believe.
